Role of a Reading Specialist
Reading specialists help schools and districts improve the quality of their reading instruction and the level of students' reading performance.

How to become a Reading Specialist
To become a reading specialist, you must first have your bachelor's degree and initial teaching certification. You also need to complete a course program that prepares you for the TExES reading specialist certification examination. TAMUCC's Master's Program in Reading is a state-approved program that fulfills this requirement. Visit that program's page to learn more about the reading program.

Domestic Students:

Fall Spring  Summer I  Summer II

International Students:

Application requirements

Complete Application for Admission:
  • Apply for Admission via Apply Texas Application
  • An applicant may defer admission to an earlier/later semester. Applications are valid for one year. One deferral is allowed per application.
Application fee:
  • $50 for US citizen, $70 for International Students

Please Note: Applicants who wish to apply for a different program will be required to submit a new application. The application processing fee is required for each application submitted.


Application requirements specific to this program :

*Please allow 3-5 business days to receive Student ID before submitting additional supporting documents.

Submit all supporting documents online.

The student must have a master’s degree in reading or closely related field and a teacher certification. The student must have taught for three years and may come in non-degree seeking and take 21 hours of reading classes that will allow them to sit for the Reading Specialist Certification Exam and complete 160 hours of Practicum/Field Experiences.
