Principal Certification

The Principal Certification program prepares teachers for the TExES Principalship Exam. To earn this certificate, you first need your initial educator certification. You must take preparatory classes in educational administration, and also take and pass the principalship TExES examination.

Application requirements

Complete Application for Admission:
  • Apply for Admission via Apply Texas Application
  • An applicant may defer admission to an earlier/later semester. Applications are valid for one year. One deferral is allowed per application.
Application fee:
  • $50 for US citizen, $70 for International Students

Please Note: Applicants who wish to apply for a different program will be required to submit a new application. The application processing fee is required for each application submitted.


Application requirements specific to this program :

    • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate course work taken at any accredited college or University attended (International applicants will be required to submit relevant International transcripts)
    • You must have a master's degree that includes 24 semester hours of graduate level coursework in educational administration. TAMUCC's Master's Program in Educational Administration fulfills this requirement without the need for any additional courses. If you have your master's degree in a subject other than Educational Administration and would like to earn the Principal Certificate, you will need to fulfill additional 24 hours of coursework. Your faculty advisor will review your previous master's degree coursework, then prescribe the necessary 24 hours of coursework from the Master's Program curriculum.
    • You must also have your initial educator certification.
    • To receive your certificate you must take and pass the TExES Principal Exam.

Courses that must be included in the 24 hours of EDAD coursework are:

  • EDAD 5304 - Introduction to the Principalship 3 sem. hrs.
  • EDAD 5363 - Public School Law 3 sem. hrs.
  • EDAD 5376 - Supervision of Teaching 3 sem. hrs. OR
  • EDAD 6376 - Supervision of Teaching 3 sem. hrs.
  • EDAD 5377 - Teacher Appraisal System 3 sem. hrs. OR
  • EDAD 6377 - Teacher Appraisal System 3 sem. hrs.
  • EDAD 5378 - Application of Administrative Concepts 3 sem. hrs. OR
  • EDAD 6378 - Application of Administrative Concepts 3 sem. hrs.
  • EDAD 5399 - School Administration Practicum 3 sem. hrs. OR
  • EDAD 6399 - School Administration Practicum 3 sem. hrs.


The student must select an additional six hours from any EDAD master’s degree or in certain instances from the EDLD doctoral degree.


The Principal Certificate also requires the student obtain a passing score on the Principal’s TExES examination.
