Elementary Education, MS (36 hours)

The Master's and Certification (MAC) Program allows you to work toward two goals simultaneously: educator certification and a master's degree in Elementary Education. Courses are offered either at night, online, or both, making it possible to fit in courses even if you work full time.

Application requirements

Complete Application for Admission:
  • Submit the MAC information form
  • Apply for Admission via Apply Texas Application
  • An applicant may defer admission to an earlier/later semester. Applications are valid for one year. One deferral is allowed per application.
Application fee:
  • $50 for US citizen, $70 for International Students

Please Note: Applicants who wish to apply for a different program will be required to submit a new application. The application processing fee is required for each application submitted.

Requirements:

Application requirements specific to this program:

  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate course work taken at any accredited college or University attended (Foreign College credits/transcripts require an official foreign evaluation. Please click here).  TAMU-CC transcript is not required.
  • Complete the Code of Ethics Education Form
  • Complete the Pre-Admission Content test and submit passing scores to gradweb@tamucc.edu

Additional International Applicant Requirements

Application requirements for international applicants:

  • Copy of current Visa (if applicable)
  • English Language Proficiency. TAMUCC currently accepts the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) within the last 2 years  :
    • Official TOEFL score minimum paper-based score of 550 or internet-based score of 79-80
    • Official IELTS score minimum 6.5

Students seeking the Master of Science in Elementary Education and EC-6 or 4-8 Certification must complete all requirements for both prior to certification and/or graduation.  Students must complete two semesters of Internship or one semester of Clinical Teaching, along with the required electives, in order to graduate.

1. Instructional Methodology (15 semester hours)

  • EDUC 5351 - Foundations of Education in America* 3 sem. hrs.
  • EDUC 5352 - Planning, Teaching, Learning Processes* 3 sem. hrs.
  • EDUC 5353 - Classroom Management and the Student* 3 sem. hrs.
  • EDUC 5354 - Methods of Teaching Mathematics 3 sem. hrs.
  • EDUC 5355 - Methods of Teaching Social Studies 3 sem. hrs.  or
  • EDUC 5356 - Methods of Teaching Science 3 sem. hrs.

*EDUC 5351, 5352, and 5353 must be completed with a grade of “B” or better and each course contains 10 field observation hours.

 

2. Specialization Area-Combination of Subjects (12 semester hours)

  • ERST 5302 - Studies in Equality of Educational Opportunities 3 sem. hrs.
  • IDET 5360 - Design Strategies for Online Instruction and Learning Management Systems* 3 sem. hrs.
  • READ 5345 - Stages and Standards for Reading Development 3 sem. hrs.
  • READ 5371 - Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Problems 3 sem. hrs.

 

3. Clinical Teaching or Internship Track Option

Students must complete two semesters of Internship or one semester of Clinical Teaching with required electives. If you choose the clinical teaching path, you will register for 6 hours of clinical teaching; these hours are not accepted for graduate credit, therefore you will be required to take two additional graduate level courses within the teacher preparation coursework.

Clinical Teaching Track:

  • 6 hours of clinical teaching. 
  • BIEM 5346 or BIEM 5347 
  • SPED 5315 or IDET 5390

If you choose the intern teacher path, you will register for EDUC 5393 & EDUC 5394 - Internship, which will total 6 sem. hrs.  These courses have a required seminar component and clinical supervision by a university field supervisor. 

Internship Track (if eligible):

  • EDUC 5393 Internship I and Seminar
  • EDUC 5394 Internship II and Seminar

 

4. Capstone Requirement (3 semester hours)
